Commissioned Baskets for Vraic, Guernsey

Commissioned Baskets for Vraic, Guernsey

I’m delighted to share that I recently created a commission of handmade baskets for Vraic, Guernsey’s new restaurant which has opened to rave reviews and earned a place in the Michelin Guide.

Nestled between the sea and L’Ancresse Common, Vraic offers a dining experience closely connected to Guernsey’s landscape, coastline and surrounding waters. Head Chef Nathan Davies and his team present a multi-course tasting menu informed by the island’s produce, alongside gentle influences from his Welsh roots.

A strong commitment to sustainability runs through every aspect of Vraic and its ingredients, with locally foraged seaweed and Guernsey seafood shaping the menu.

Fire-led cooking on a large BBQ is central to the kitchen and fully visible to diners, creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere grounded in natural materials.

Basketry inspired by Guernsey’s fishing traditions has been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the space. Bread is served in baskets influenced by the traditional Guernsey fishing courge, while ponier à cous appear in the bathrooms. A vraic gathering pannier is used to store sheepskins for cosy outdoor seating, and courges are decoratively resting in seaweed above the bar.

Named after the Guernésiais word for seaweed, Vraic reflects a close relationship with place, season and tradition. It has been a pleasure to make work for a restaurant that values craft, sustainability and considered design, and to see these pieces become part of such a well-received and distinctive space.
